Mental health is a conversation that many people struggle to have openly. Behind smiles, routines, responsibilities, and even moments of worship, there are individuals quietly carrying emotional pain, anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and isolation. As a church community, we believe it is important to approach these realities with compassion, understanding, and hope.

This Health Day at Acreage SDA Church, we are focusing on the theme:

“Wholeness begins with identity: God’s truth about me versus the lies that break me down.”

Our afternoon presentation, “Breaking the Silence: Understanding Suicide,” presented by Eltanya Patterson, MD, is designed to encourage honest conversation surrounding mental and emotional health while reminding individuals that they are not alone.

Why This Conversation Matters

Suicide and mental health struggles affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. Many individuals suffer silently because they fear judgment, misunderstanding, or rejection. Unfortunately, silence can deepen feelings of hopelessness.

As Christians, we are called to love, support, encourage, and care for one another. Creating safe spaces for conversation does not weaken faith — it strengthens community. It reminds people that seeking help is not a sign of failure, but a step toward healing.

Understanding the Importance of Identity

One of the greatest battles many people face is the struggle between truth and destructive thoughts. The world often places identity in performance, success, appearance, acceptance, or past mistakes. When those things fail, feelings of worthlessness can begin to grow.

God’s truth speaks differently.

Scripture reminds us that we are loved, valued, created with purpose, and never abandoned by God. Healing often begins when individuals understand that their identity is not defined by pain, trauma, fear, or negative thoughts.

Wholeness begins when we replace harmful lies with truth, grace, and hope.

The Church’s Role in Mental Wellness

The church should be a place where individuals can find encouragement, prayer, support, and connection. While spiritual guidance is important, mental health challenges may also require professional care, counseling, medical support, and community resources.

There is strength in reaching out.

There is courage in asking for help.

There is hope even during difficult seasons.

At Acreage SDA Church, we believe conversations about mental health should be approached with compassion, wisdom, and Christ-centered love.

We invite community members, families, young adults, and anyone seeking encouragement to attend this meaningful event.
